The Yellowstone River
This is the part of the Yellowstone River that I know best: the slightly muddy water, the flat stones, the wide channels, and the narrower braids. The middle section as it transitions to a prairie river widens and slows.
It does start, you know, as a narrow mountain stream from the mighty Younts Peak. It collects water from the wildest drainages of Yellowstone National Park, past bison and bears and wolves and coyotes and elk and moose and deer and mountain goats and sheep; into Yellowstone Lake and out again, crashing over Lower Falls, through Paradise Valley, over the plains, past Livingston and Big Timber and Columbus and Laurel, paralleling I-90 to this place, to this flat stretch, bordered by cottonwoods and vast riverbottoms.
And, of course, on and on again, carrying the wild with it.
