Beartooth Snowfields
Itβs something, you know.
On a searing hot August day,
driving away from town,
weaving amongst traffic,
then sporadic towns,
farms and ranches,
towards the mountains.
A lost stop at the gas station,
perhaps a treat of licorice,
and then driving;
pavement turns to gravel,
gravel to a parking lot,
parking lot to a trail,
trail to a faint suggestion of a path.
Up,
up,
up.
The air thins, cools, crisps,
and with the heat and overload still pulsing,
a snowfield.
Vast,
pitted,
shadowed,
iced,
and
calm.
